Blowing a Gasket in the Cold

Filed under: Keep On Road — admin @ 3:54 am

Well as forecast the cold weather did hit us and speaking for a gagage that specialises in buying cars that are non runners, gues what was the most common form or breakdown? Yes it was that cylinder head gasket fault. You know the one, it is where a vehicle owner does not fill up with antifreeze and the changing temperature pushes water in to the cylinders.

As it happens I was looking for a cheap runaround and sure enough within one day there were 3 to choose from, all bought at silly low prices as a non runner and then with £50 worth of parts and half a days work, all three were back on the road again.

The breakdown cover guys are getting calls for the same thing. My car wont start!! “very sorry, it is becuase yuo did not put antifreeze into your car, I can’t fix this, you need to trake to a garage”. Away goes the breakdown cover man shaking his head wondering when many drivers will wake up to such a simple process that can save you a fortune.

Can’t say this many more times, get your antifreeze levels checked.

OK to you and me the transmission is the gearbox, either manual or automatic. just like the engine it needs lubrication fluid to keep it right and trouble free. This is an American video but shows you how easy it to check your transmission fluid, expecially on front wheeled drive vehciles, where the gearbox is under the bonnet with the engine.
You can do this job in minutes and to be honest most gearboxes can outlive the car, so dont expect to find much wrong.

Shockers And Suspension Struts

Filed under: Keep On Road — admin @ 10:10 am

If your car is getting on in mileage then there is going to come a time when the either the shockers, struts or even both need replacing. Many wait until the MOT test before doing any replacements, but you can normally notice that they need replacing when the car becomes very hard over bumps, or it leans to one side or down.

For many cars, this is not a hard job and can be done by most DIY savvy guys, although compressing the unit can take a bit of force and you need to be careful with the brake lines. Here is part one of another DIY video on how to change struts or shocks on your car.

Repairing A Salvage Truck

Filed under: Keep On Road — admin @ 5:47 am

Often repairing a car yourself seems like a no brainer especially of your insurance did not cover you for a recent accident and you have this salvage projects tuck on your drive almost worthless. But time and advice should be sought to how much effort and money is required putting a salvage car back on the road, even for damage that does not look that bad.

Here is a video diary that shows how much work was required to get a GMC track salvage job back on to the road. In some ways it makes it look easy, but in other s you can get a real feel of how much work went into the salvage repair job. This makes no reference to costs and you can’t help thinking there were a lot of mates helping out, where you may not have that resource. It was also lucky that he had a large backyard to place the truck during the repairs. You cant help thinking the cost of doing this was more than buying another, but I suppose the resalable value of trucks is still quite high in certain areas of the USA.
